Purpose
This tutorial demonstrates two ways to set up a quiz in Moodle that will not produce a score (but is also not an extra credit item).
Options
Set the Quiz Grade Value as Zero
Change the Quiz Weight in the Gradebook
Procedure
Set the Quiz Grade Value as Zero
Click on your quiz title on your course page
Click on the questions tab
On the quiz editing page, set the "Maximum grade to 0.00.
Set the value of each question to 0.00.
The students will not be awarded points.
The downside is that the quiz won't show up in the Moodle gradebook for the students.
If they want to review the quiz results, they will have to click on the quiz title on the homepage of your course and scroll through the quiz to review each answered question.
Change the Quiz Weight in the Gradebook
Alternatively, you can input a value in the Maximum grade field and set point values on each question, but change the “weight” of the quiz in the grade book.
After setting points for the quiz grade and each question, return to your course page and click on Grades.
Select Gradebook setup from the dropdown menu.
Locate the textbox in the “Weights” column for the quiz.
Mark the small checkbox to activate the field.
Type a “0.0” in the textbox.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes.
You can scroll back to the item to ensure that the change was saved successfully.
Your students will see the quiz score in the gradebook.
It will not contribute to the course total, because you have changed the weight to “0” in the gradebook.
The downside is that students may not notice you have weighted the activity as “0” points, and they may think the points will count for that quiz.
You can easily remedy this by leaving a note in the quiz instructions that explains the intended point value of the activity.
