Respondus 4: Question Bank HTML Cleanup

HTML Formatting Cleanup Techniques

Updated over 7 months ago

Purpose

This tutorial will demonstrate two processes for clearing problematic text formatting of question sets in your exams. HTML formatting issues may arise when you create an exam in Respondus 4 and import it into your Moodle course.

The clean-up is very fast and easy in Respondus 4. If you’ve already imported into Moodle and are unable to re-import, then you can do the HTML clean-up in Moodle, as well.

Procedure

The Respondus 4 Method for HTML Cleanup

This generally affects Question Banks obtained from textbook publishers or imported question sets from an MS Word file. These files can often contain undesirable HTML formatting within the questions and answers.

For example, once you send your quiz into Moodle, you may notice that the correct answer appears in a different font, or bold or italics, etc. This difference may be very subtle.

This image illustrates a question bank question and answer set where the correct answer appears bold, and therefore this would be obvious to the student.

Question bank question and answer

It is strongly recommended that you clean the HTML formatting from all of your Respondus exam files before you send them to Moodle.

Open the Respondus exam.

Click on File and then choose, Cleanup HTML tool.

Arrow pointing to the file menu in the upper right hand corner

There are three options available

Cleanup HTML Tool

Option 1 (Remove extra HTML copied/pasted from MS Word) may be sufficient in removing undesirable HTML, such as showing the correct answer in bold.

Option 2 (Remove extra HTML from Word; remove font changes except for Courier and Symbol) can be used if Option 1 didn’t clean up all of the Bold, italics, or other indicators that showed which is the correct answer.

Option 3 (Remove all HTML commands except basic formatting and tables) should be used cautiously. This option will also strip out the HTML code that links images in the question.

After selecting one of the three options, click the OK button. You should spot-check your Respondus exam to ensure the HTML formatting is cleared. If it wasn’t, repeat the process and select a different option from the Cleanup HTML Tool menu.

Save the exam.

The exam is ready to be uploaded to Moodle.

The Moodle HTML Cleanup Method

This method is time-consuming and not ideal. It is best if you know which questions and/or answers need the HTML cleaned up, or you will need to do this for all the questions and answers in the quiz.

  1. Click on the exam in your Moodle course.

  2. Select the Questions tab.

  3. Click on the question that needs the HTML cleaned up

    Quiz Questions tab

  4. Highlight question/answer text

  5. Click on the clear formatting button

Question settings page with arrow pointing to the Clear Formatting icon.

  6. Repeat for each question/answer that requires cleanup. If you are unsure which ones you will need to do this for each question and answer.
