Purpose
This article demonstrates how to set up an assignment to allow for multiple attempts. When you follow the configuration below, Moodle will automatically reopen it for the student if the grade you post does not meet the minimum passing score.
Procedure
Click on the Turn editing on button and choose Assignment from the activity chooser
Choose your desired settings for title, dates, etc.
In the Submission settings section, select Yes for Require students to click the submit button
For Additional attempts, choose, Automatically until pass
Set the Maximum attempts to a number greater than one (1) to indicate how many tries you will allow the students to have
In the Grades section, place a grade in Grade to pass
This number is based on the max grade for the activity. For example, if your activity is worth 100, and 80% is a passing grade, then type 80 in the Grade to pass textbox.
β¨ If you donβt include a Grade to pass, students will not be able to resubmit if you post a failing grade for an attempt.
The Process
π Grade the Assignment after the student submits the required materials.
β If the grade is lower than the number in Grade to pass, the activity will automatically reopen for the student.
β If the grade is equal to or greater than the Grade to pass, nothing more is required from the student and the instructor. This is the final grade for the activity.
The Student Experience
When the student clicks on the assignment link on the course page, the following screen will appear, indicating the current attempt and the total attempts allowed for the activity.

This screen shows the student the attempt number and submission status.
If the option is available, the student can add to an attempt or start with a fresh attempt.
When the minimum grade requirement is met OR the maximum number of attempts is reached, the student will no longer be able to submit new work or update previously submitted work.
Students will be able to view information on previous attempts and grades. See the example below.
