Course Copy Specific Items

Learn how to copy only specific items from one course to another

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the steps for copying specific items from one course to another.

Procedure

  1. Search for the course you want to copy content from y using the five-digit or nine-digit CRN. The CRN is at the end of the course title on your course page.

Examples of course names: CYB101_N30_SP26 - Introduction to Cybersecurity/10787 and CYB101_CCS_SP26 - Introduction to Cybersecurity/(202610222)

2. In one browser tab, open the course you are copying from. In another browser tab, open the course you are copying to.

Note

It’s helpful to write down the CRNs (e.g. From: 10000, To: 20000).

Examine the contents of the “From” course to be certain these are the materials you want to copy into the “To” course.

3. In the course the content will be copied into (the “To” course), click the More dropdown menu.

4. Select Course Reuse from the drop-down menu.

5. On the next page, select Import.

6. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and paste in the full name of the From course - just copy it from the first of your two windows. Click the Search button.

7. Click on the Search button.

8. The From course should now display. Click the radio button next to the course and click on the Continue button at the bottom of the page.

9. On the Import settings page, keep only the following items check-marked:

  • Include activities and resources

  • Include files

  • Include question bank

  • Include content bank content

    • NOTE. Don’t keep the Question bank marked if you are not copying quizzes!

10. Click the Next button.

11. Select items to import.

12. Uncheck everything except for the item(s) you want to copy.

Note

There is a None option at the top of the list. It is easier to deselect everything first and then just pick the few that you need.

13. In order to select specific items, check the box in the section where an item is housed, and then select the individual items.

14. When you are finished reviewing, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Next.

15. Review content to import.

Items with the green checkmark will be copied. ✔

Items with a orange X will not be copied.

Content with a green checkmark will be copied, and content with a red X will not.

16. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Perform import.

17. You’ll see a progress status bar. Do not close the window until it is completed.

Contact Moodle Support if you receive an error message or encounter other problems when copying.

You may also need to complete the action items below!!

  • Dates: Update the activity dates (Reports > Dates)

  • Gradebook: Check categories, hidden items, and overall setup

  • Content: Check images, audio, and links to ensure everything works

  • Quizzes: Verify that images, audio, and embedded media copied over correctly

  • Respondus LockDown Browser (if used): Click Dashboard, then check quiz configurations.

  • Question Bank: Question banks can grow quickly after multiple course copies. Take time to organize if needed and reduce excessive categories.

    • Caution: Avoid deleting questions that are used in quizzes. Contact us for guidance on safe cleanup strategies.
