Restrictions: Give Student Access to Restricted Sections, Assignments or Activities

Using Groups to Restrict Sections, Assignments, or Activities.

Updated over 7 months ago

Purpose

This article demonstrates how to add restrictions to activities in Moodle.

This method will allow a single student, or a specific group of students, to access a restricted item in your course by enrolling the student, or students, into a Group

Warning

For reasons such as providing accommodations to specific students make sure to protect their privacy by adhering to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).

By NOT following the steps outlined in this article, this is what other students can potentially see:

student's name and email, with red annotations highlighting potential FERPA violations.

Note

This only works if you set up the item as Restricted. There is no way to grant student access if you set the item as Hidden.

Procedure

Create a Group

Click on the Participants link at the top of your course.

Course Home Page with arrow pointing to Participants tab.

Select Groups from the drop-down in the upper left-hand corner.

Drop down menu with Groups selected.

(Groups that you create will appear here.)

Click on the Create group button.

Create group button highlighted

Type in a Group name. A Group ID number and Group description are not required.

The best practice is to place the student/s in a group with a generic name, such as Group Alpha. Do not include students' names in the Group Name.

Click the Save changes button.

Click on the Group name.

Click the Add/remove users button.

The Add/remove users screen will appear.

Arrow pointing to group name "Group Alpha." Add/remove users button highlighted.

Select one or more students to place in the Group.

Click the Add button.

The student(s) should now appear in the left column under Group members.

Return to your course page.

Grant Access to Restricted Item

Now that you have the Group set up, you are ready to grant access to restricted items or sections.

Click on the activity that you are restricting

Click on the Settings tab

Scroll down to the Common module settings and ensure that the Availability is set to Show on course page.

Scroll down to Restrict access and click on the Add restriction button.

Add restriction button highlighted.

The Add restrictionโ€ฆ screen will pop up.

Click the Group button.

"Add restriction" menu with the "Group" option highlighted for access control.

Be sure to choose, "Student must match the following."

Select the desired group from the second dropdown.

Drop down menu with "Group A" highlighted.

To Hide the assignment from other students:

Click on the Eyeball so it displays a line through it. This step is important if you do not want other students to see this Assignment/Activity.

Arrow pointing to eye icon with slash through it.

Click on Save and return to course.

Checking for proper setup of Restrictions

To ensure you set up the restriction properly, switch your role to Student. Make sure you are not able to see the assignment/quiz. Don't forget to switch it back once you are finished.

Dropdown menu displayed with "Switch role to..." selected.

If done correctly, this is what Group A will see:

"Alternate Assignment" section highlighted, that includes the date the assignment opened as well as the due date.

This is what other students will see:

Course page showing Quiz 1 and Assignment 1, with an annotation indicating that an alternate assignment is hidden from view.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Remember, you cannot set the activity or section as a Hidden item. The restriction takes the place of hiding the item.
