Manual Grade Items

Learn how to create a grade item

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how to manually add a grade item into the Moodle gradebook

Procedures

  1. On your course homepage, click on Grades. This takes you to the Grader report page

  2. At the Grader Report page, click on the dropdown menu located on the upper left side of the page to access the Gradebook setup page

  3. On the Gradebook setup page, click on the Add grade item button

  4. Type a name for the grade item

  5. Provide the maximum possible points for the item

  6. If you have grade categories set up, choose the desired category here. If you haven’t set up categories, skip this step

  7. Click the Save changes button at the bottom of the page

    The grade item will appear in your Gradebook list

  8. Click on the dropdown menu and select Grader Report

  9. Click into the cell that corresponds with a student's name to add a numerical grade. The right-side box is for optional comments

Items added this way will not go to the Recycle Bin if you accidentally delete them

Note

If you want to copy your course in the future, the ONLY way manually added grade items will copy is if you do a full course import. If you deselect even one item during the import, NONE of these items will import

Note

You can create categories for your graded items following similar steps. Only create a category if you intend to add graded items to it. Categories are especially helpful for weighted grade items
