Gradebook: Drop Lowest Score(s)

Learn how to enable dropping the lowest score in an activity

Updated over 6 months ago

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how to set up a Moodle feature that will drop the lowest score or scores for an activity

Note

To enable the Drop the lowest option:

All items in the category must have equal weight and equal point value

You cannot include any extra credit items in the category

Please be aware that if a student has two assignments with the exact same grade for their lowest grade, the gradebook WILL drop one, but the Dropped tag will not show for that item

Procedures

  1. From the Gradebook setup page, for the category you intend to update, click on Edit and choose Edit settings from the drop-down menu

Dropdown menu with arrow pointing to Edit settings

  2. Click the Show more... link, which is at the bottom of the section called Grade category

Red arrow pointing to the Show more link

  3. Locate the Drop the lowest data box

Red arrow pointing to the Drop the lowest data entry box

  4. Enter the number of graded assignments that you want to drop from that category in the gradebook

  5. Click Save Changes

Remember, this action applies only to a selected category. You will have to repeat the steps for additional categories that need to have a “drop lowest” function applied to them
