Procedures

Add a new scale

A scale is an ordered list of marks or text values, ranging from negative to positive (e.g. "Sub-standard, Less than satisfactory, Satisfactory, Good, Very good, Excellent!”), that can be used as a marking strategy for an assessment task.

  1. Click on Grades

  2. Click on the dropdown menu and select Scales

Grader report dropdown menu with Scales option highlighted

  3. Click on the Add a new scale button

  4. On the Scale page, give your new scale a title in the Name field

  5. Next, enter the terms of the Scale. Each term must be separated by a comma

    Scale set tp Fail, Pass

  6. Use the most negative rating first and continue until the last item is the most positive rating

  7. Click Save changes

Your scale will appear on the Scales page in the Custom scales section. You will be able to edit or delete it. It will also display as a grading option when you configure an activity.

Change the value of the Course Letter Grades

  2. Click on the Drop-down and select Grade letters

  3. On the Grade letters page, click on Edit

Red arrow pointing to Edit button

  4. Select the Override site defaults checkbox to modify the information

  5. Change the letter names and the percentages in the Grade letter fields. The names you choose here will be seen by the students

This example replaces A, B, C, D, and F with the words Pass and Fail.

The proportions are also different from the default percentages for a standard letter grade system.

  6. Click Save changes

Pass score greater than or equal to 80%; Fail score greater or equal to 0%

Change Grade Display Type for the whole Gradebook, or per item

  1. On the Gradebook Setup page, click Edit and then click Edit settings on the desired category or grade item

Dropdown menu under Edit with Edit settings option highlighted

  2. In the Category total section, locate Grade display type

  3. Select Letter or the desired combination of letter, percentage and numerical values

Grade display type set to Letter

  4. Click Save changes at the bottom of the page
