Moodle: Suggestions for Quiz Settings

More flexibility is recommended for quizzes and exams given online.

Purpose

This article presents recommended settings for a quiz or exam in Moodle.

Recommended Settings

LAYOUT: Set Navigation method as “Free” (This is the default setting) so that students can return to a previously answered question.

LAYOUT: Set the exam to display only one question per page (This is the default setting). If a student loses internet connection, the questions they have already answered will be saved when they return.

TIMING: Consider no time limit for low-stakes exams.

TIMING: If you need to set a time limit, allow more time than what might have been required in a F2F class. Upward of 2 to 3 times longer.

GRADE: Allow for multiple attempts with a Grading method of either “Last Attempt,” or “Average Attempt.”

PROCTORING: Avoid using the Respondus LockDown Browser for low-stakes exams.

QUESTIONS: Consider fewer T/F and multiple-choice questions. Replace with essay style questions.
