What is an authenticator app?
Updated over a week ago

An authenticator app is a mobile application designed to generate and manage one-time passwords (OTPs) for two-factor authentication (2FA) or multi-factor authentication (MFA). These apps provide an additional layer of security beyond just a password by requiring users to enter a time-sensitive code generated by the app along with their password when logging into an account.

Here's how an authenticator app typically works:

  1. Setup: When setting up 2FA for an account, you usually have the option to use an authenticator app. During the setup process, the service provides a QR code or a secret key that you need to scan or enter into the authenticator app.

  2. Generation of One-Time Codes: Once configured, the authenticator app generates a new six-digit code every 30 seconds or so. These codes are unique to your account and are used as a second factor of authentication.

  3. Login Process: When you log in to your account, you'll be prompted to enter your username and password as usual. After that, you'll need to open the authenticator app on your mobile device to retrieve the current six-digit code and enter it into the login screen within the specified time window.
