What file types can I upload to Cognibuild?

Cognibuild works from the text within the documents you upload. It reads and analyses that text to produce deliverables and to let you query your documentation. Understanding how this works helps you get the most from the platform.

You can upload:

Cognibuild reads the text contained in your documents. It does not visually interpret images. It works from the text layer of a file, not from pictures, scans, or graphics.

This means a document needs readable text for Cognibuild to use it. A typical PDF or Word file produced from a digital source contains this text and works without any issue.

You can upload drawings, and Cognibuild will use the text within them, such as title blocks, annotations, schedules, and notes. What it cannot do is read a drawing as an image or interpret the lines and geometry visually. So a drawing is useful for the information written on it, not for the visual content of the drawing itself.

A file that contains no readable text, for example a scanned page saved as an image or an image-only PDF, cannot be analysed, because there is no text for Cognibuild to read.

If a document cannot be used, it is usually because it has no readable text (such as a scan or image-only file), or occasionally because of its size or another practical issue. If this happens, uploading a version of the document that contains selectable text, for example the original digital PDF or Word file rather than a scan, will resolve it in most cases.

When you produce a deliverable, the finished output is provided as a Word document, which you can download and use however you need.
