A Take Profit Order sells your crypto automatically if its price rises to a target you choose, helping you lock in gains without watching the market. This article explains how it works and how to place one on the Coinstash website.
Take Profit Orders are one of our Conditional Orders.
How a Take Profit Order works
A Take Profit Order helps you protect gains. You set the amount of an asset to sell if its price rises to a particular level above the current market price.
Take Profit Orders must have a trigger price above the current price. You're waiting for the price to rise to a level where you want to sell.
Example (hypothetical prices)
Say you hold BTC, it's trading at $100,000 AUD, and you'd like to sell if it rises to $110,000 AUD.
You place a Take Profit Order with a take profit price of $110,000 AUD/BTC.
While the price is below $110,000, nothing happens.
If BTC rises to or above $110,000, your order is triggered and your BTC is sold.
These prices are for illustration only and don't reflect current market prices.
How to place a Take Profit Order (web browser)
Step 1 – Open Trade
Once logged in, you'll be taken to your account dashboard. Click Trade in the navigation menu or dashboard to open the trading interface.
Step 2 – Choose your coin
Choose the cryptocurrency you want to place a Take Profit Order for, then click the Buy/Sell/Swap button.
Step 3 – Select Take Profit
Click the Take Profit option under SELL to open the order form.
Step 4 – Enter your take profit price
Enter the price at which you want the order to trigger. This is the price level at which a market sell order will be initiated to lock in your profits. Using the example above, you'd enter $110,000.
Step 5 – Enter the amount to sell
Enter the quantity you want to sell in the I want to sell.. field. For example, 0.11 BTC.
Step 6 – Place the order and check the total
Click Place Take Profit Order. The form automatically calculates and displays an estimated total based on the take profit price and quantity. Review this total for accuracy.
Step 7 – Monitor your order
Your Take Profit Order stays inactive until the market price reaches or passes your take profit price. You'll receive an email notification once it's executed.
⚠️ Good to know
The total is an estimate. Once triggered, a market sell order is placed, so the final amount you receive can differ slightly from the estimate, especially for less liquid coins. See Slippage and liquidity explained.
Your order may never trigger if the price doesn't reach your target. It stays open until conditions are met or you cancel it, which you can do any time for free. See How can I cancel an order?
Pair it with a Stop Loss if you also want protection on the way down. See What is a Stop Loss Order?
Trade fees apply when your order executes. See What is the Trade Fee?
Troubleshooting
My Take Profit hasn't executed. The price hasn't reached your take profit price yet. Check your open orders in the Orders section of your Portfolio.
Where do my proceeds go? Once your order executes, the proceeds appear in your Coinstash account, just like a normal sale. See How do I sell Cryptocurrency?
Other order types: Buy Limit Order · Buy Stop Order · Stop Loss Order
