What is a Buy Stop Order?

How a Buy Stop Order works on Coinstash, how it differs from a Buy Limit, a worked example, and how to place one on the website.

A Buy Stop Order buys a coin automatically once its price rises to a level you choose. This article explains how it works, how it differs from a Buy Limit Order, and how to place one on the Coinstash website.

Buy Stop Orders are one of our Conditional Orders.

How a Buy Stop Order works

A Buy Stop Order helps you buy at your preferred price in a rising market. The order only becomes live once the price hits a stop price you set above the current market price.

You're waiting for the price to go up and show strength before buying. Buy Stop Orders are commonly used when buying breakouts.

Example (hypothetical prices)

Say BTC is trading at $100,000 AUD, and you only want to buy if it climbs to $105,000 AUD.

  • You place a Buy Stop Order with a stop price of $105,000 AUD/BTC.

  • While the price is below $105,000, nothing happens.

  • Once, and only when, BTC hits $105,000, your order becomes live and executes at the next best available price.

These prices are for illustration only and don't reflect current market prices.

Buy Stop vs Buy Limit

  • Buy Stop: trigger price above the current price. Buys when the price rises.

  • Buy Limit: trigger price below the current price. Buys when the price falls. See What is a Buy Limit Order?

How to place a Buy Stop Order (web browser)

Step 1 – Open Trade

Once logged in, you'll be taken to your account dashboard. Click Trade in the navigation menu or dashboard to open the trading interface.

Step 2 – Choose your coin

Choose the cryptocurrency you want to place a Buy Stop Order for, then click the Buy/Sell/Swap button.

Step 3 – Select Buy Stop

Click the Buy Stop option under BUY to open the order form.

Step 4 – Enter your stop price

Enter the price at which you want the order to trigger. This is the price above the current market price at which you want to enter the trade. Using the example above, you'd enter $105,000.

Step 5 – Enter the amount

Enter how much you want to purchase in the I want to purchase.. field. For example, 5,000 AUD.

Step 6 – Place the order and check the total

Click Place Buy Stop Order. The form automatically calculates and displays the total cost based on the stop price and quantity. Review this total to make sure it's accurate.

Step 7 – Monitor your order

You can monitor the order's status in your trading interface. If the market price reaches or passes your stop price, the order is triggered and executed as a market order. You'll receive an email notification once it's complete.

⚠️ Good to know

  • The final price can differ from your stop price. Because a triggered Buy Stop executes as a market order at the next best available price, you may pay slightly more than your stop price, especially in fast-moving or low-liquidity markets. See Slippage and liquidity explained.

  • You can cancel any time, for free, while the order hasn't executed. See How can I cancel an order?

  • Trade fees apply when your order executes. See What is the Trade Fee?

Troubleshooting

The form won't accept my price. A Buy Stop price must be above the current market price. To buy if the price falls, use a Buy Limit Order.

My order hasn't executed. The price hasn't reached your stop price yet. Your order stays open until it does, or until you cancel it.
