A Buy Limit Order lets you decide the most you're willing to pay for a coin, and buys it automatically if the price falls to that level. This article explains how it works and shows you how to place one on the Coinstash website.
Buy Limit Orders are one of our Conditional Orders.
How a Buy Limit Order works
Buy Limit Orders help you control how much you pay for an asset. You set an order to buy an asset at or below a specific price you choose.
A Buy Limit Order must have a trigger price below the current market price. You're waiting for the asset to fall to your preferred purchase price.
Example (hypothetical prices)
Say BTC is trading at $100,000 AUD, and you'd only like to buy if it drops to $90,000 AUD.
You place a Buy Limit Order with a limit price of $90,000 AUD/BTC.
If the price stays above $90,000, nothing happens and your order stays open.
If the price drops to or below $90,000, your order executes.
These prices are for illustration only and don't reflect current market prices.
Before you start
Use the desktop website: Limit orders are placed on the Coinstash website in a web browser.
Have AUD ready: Make sure you have AUD in your account for the amount you want to buy. See Depositing AUD into Your Coinstash Account.
How to place a Buy Limit Order (web browser)
Step 1 – Open Trade
Once logged in, you'll be taken to your account dashboard. Click Trade in the navigation menu or dashboard to open the trading interface.
Step 2 – Choose your coin
Choose the cryptocurrency you want to place a Buy Limit Order for, then click the Buy/Sell/Swap button.
Step 3 – Select Buy Limit
Click the Buy Limit option under BUY to open the order form.
Step 4 – Enter your limit price
Enter the price at which you want the order to execute. This is the maximum price you're willing to pay. Using the example above, with BTC at $100,000, you'd enter $90,000 as the limit price.
Step 5 – Enter the amount
Enter how much you want to purchase in the I want to purchase.. field. For example, 5,000 AUD.
Step 6 – Place the order and check the total
Click Place Buy Limit Order. The form automatically calculates and displays the total cost of the order based on the limit price and quantity. Review this total to make sure it's accurate.
Step 7 – Monitor your order
Once placed, you can monitor the order's status in your trading interface. The order remains open until the market price reaches or goes below your limit price. When it executes, you'll receive an email notification.
⚠️ Good to know
Your order may never fill. If the price doesn't fall to your limit, the order won't execute. It stays open until conditions are met or you cancel it.
You can cancel any time, for free. Unexecuted orders can be cancelled from the Orders section of your Portfolio. See What is a Conditional Order?
Trade fees apply when your order executes. See What is the Trade Fee?
Troubleshooting
The form won't accept my price. A Buy Limit price must be below the current market price. If you want to buy once the price rises to a level, use a Buy Stop Order instead.
I can't find Buy Limit in the app. Limit orders are available on the desktop website.
Other order types: Buy Stop Order · Take Profit Order · Stop Loss Order
