A locked phone is restricted for use only on a specific carrier's network due to contract terms, or if the device is not paid off. Locking ensures you stay with that carrier until the contract expires, or the device is paid off.
If you purchased your device directly from the manufacturer, it will be unlocked.
For devices purchased through a carrier (T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, etc), devices can be unlocked after certain conditions are met – typically, the device is paid off, the account is in good standing, and a certain time period has passed since activation – this can be 40-90 days.
How to Tell if a Device Is Locked
Some phones (like iPhones) may show “Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions” under Settings > General > About if they are unlocked.
Newer Android devices don’t show if they are carrier locked. You can usually see the device status when logged into your account on your current carrier's app or website.
If your device is locked, you can request an unlock, typically through the carrier app or website . Sometimes this is immediate, but its recommended to wait 48 hours for confirmation.
