Best tips for improving the pronunciation

We know that sometimes you'll notice minor problems with the pronunciation of certain words or phrases. Check out our tips below.

Use Listen

One of the best ways is to use the "Listen" button. This will allow you to hear how the actor would say each line before it's generated. If there are any minor problems with pronunciation, you can catch them before they're generated on your actor!

Listen to a selected part

You can also Listen to part of your script just by selecting it and pressing 'Play selected'.

Split your script into paragraphs

Separating key sentences from each other can help your troubleshooting efforts and fix the words much faster.

For best results, always use punctuation at the end of sentences, do not use dashes or any other symbol that’s not a comma, a dot, an exclamation mark, or a question mark.

Acronyms and numbers

Here are some tips to help you out:

• Try inserting hyphens or using phonetic spelling. E.g.: acrophobia ---> ah-crowfoh-bee-uh

• Acronyms can sometimes be spelled as they sound, so try that first. E.g.: FBI ---> f–bee–ay

• Numbers can also be spelled in words, so if you need to write them out, try doing it that way first! E.g.: twenty-four ---> 24

Do not mix languages

Do not include words from more than 2 different languages in one script.

Add breaks and emphasis

You may use SSML to add breaks between any words or sentences. Simply use the following tag:

<break time="Xs" />

where X is the number of seconds pause that you want in speech. We also support milliseconds as input, in such cases just write: ms

There are other ways to add breaks & emphasis to your script:

1. Periods (.) will add a long break and downward inflection; this makes them great for ending scenes or chapters!

2. Commas (,) will add shorter breaks than a period. Use commas when you want to emphasize a specific word or part of the sentence without adding too much length or inflection.

3. Quotation marks ("") will add emphasis to a specific word or part of the sentence. The quantitation marks when you want to highlight a specific part of your script.

Adding breaks is currently available by using a limited number of Colossyan actors; check out the list below:
