The Business Edge has an efficient way to handle Unit of Measure (UOM) conversions when your units of measure vary from stocking, selling and purchasing. This can be handled through the following path:

In the example below the product is purchased by the foot and stocked/sold as a stick. Therefore, we are converting the UOM “Feet” to the UOM “PCS”.
In this scenario we would like to buy 3foot threaded rod, but stock them as single sticks. This will require 2 units of measure (UOM) to be setup. The first will be the purchasing UOM. We will use the same code as we do for the description 3FTROD-1STICK. This is the UOM that carries the relationship. Anytime a UOM carries a relationship and is not 1 for 1, then the stocking type must be Non-Stocking. The non-stocking UOM should look like this:
The Quantity Per and Unit Dollars per are set at 1/3 (or .333333) so that when 3 feet of an item is received on a Purchase Order the 3feet will equate to 1 stick. The system knows this because we will relate this non-stocking UOM 3FTROD-1STICK to stocking UOM 1STICK-3FT as shown in the setup below.
First, we must create the UOM that notes 1 stick is equivalent 3ft as shown below: Note the Quantity Per and Unit Dollars Per are set to (1)
Whenever an item is purchased at one UOM and stocked/sold at a different UOM, the two UOM’s must be related to one another and itself.
Once you have entered the UOMs, click lookup on the right-hand side under Additional Information and choose your UOM. Once you have your UOM on the screen go to Additional Information again and select Edit Related List, then New Line.
Next, select the UOM from the list. After a UOM is selected the relationship between the UOMs is established. Continue selecting New Line until you have related all applicable UOM’s. In this case we need to relate 3FTROD-1STICK to 1STICK-3FT. We also need to make sure 3FTROD-1STICK is related to itself (3FTROD-1STICK). The non-stocking (3FTROD-1STICK) related list is shown below.
The stocking (1STICK-3FT) is related to itself and the 3FTROD-1STICK.
The standard threaded rod lengths throughout the industry are 3, 6, 10 and 12. The relationships should be set for the different lengths as shown below 6 foot = 1/6
10ft = 1/10
12ft = 1/12
