The Business Edge has many shortcuts built into its data routines. Did you know that whenever you are at a Numeric Entry, you have the option of entering a formula? If you enter a formula, the system will perform the calculation and enter the result of the calculation in that field.

This works for virtually all numeric fields. The examples below are just illustrations. The number of places that this feature can be used is endless.

Let us say that you are entering an Order and you want to give the Customer 10 percent off of List Price. The list Price, $15.00 is shown on the screen. You have the option of entering 13.50 when you go to the Unit Sell Field, or you could type 15*.9 and let the system fill in the 13.50.

You can have the system complete more complex calculations as well. Let’s say that you offered him a 10 percent discount and you told him that if he picks it up, you will give him $1.00 off because you are going to save the freight. You could type in 12.50, or you could type 15*.9-1. Both of these entries will put 12.50 into the Sell Price.

If you do not have List Prices, but you want to maintain a certain Profit Margin, you might do the following. You might look at your Cost and calculate the Gross Margin that you would like to get.

In this example, let us say that your Cost was $7.50 and you want to get a 30 percent Markup on this sale. You could type in 10.714 or you could type in 7.5/.7. This will divide the Cost by .7. This calculation will give you the same result 10.714, for the Sell Price.

The Symbols are as follows:

The Plus Key, + , means Add.

The Minus Key, – , means Subtract.

The Forward Slash, / , found on the ten keypad and next to the right hand shift key, is Divide.

The Asterisk, * , on the ten keypad and above the 8 key on the Typewriter Keyboard is Multiply.

You can even use brackets in your calculation:

If you type 10*(12-5), the result will be 70.

If you type 10*12-5, the result will be 115.
