How to add default content to your classic email templates

Here's everything you need to know about setting up default content in your classic email templates.

Updated over a week ago

We've made it easier than ever to format your emails.

NOTE: This article applies to classic email templates and not starting point templates.

If you're using a starting point template, you can add your default content anywhere in the template. Your default content will appear when you select your starting point template to create a new Broadcast or Sequence.

With our default content feature, you can add boilerplate content to your classic email templates to make writing emails a simpler task in your future.

This means that you don’t need to duplicate an old Broadcast to make a similar one—you can just add the content to your template!

When you create a Broadcast or Sequence using a classic email template containing default content, your email will start with the default content you've set. From there, you can tweak any text, images, and links, to fit the body of the email.

Why use default content?

Default content is perfect if you use the same formatting for your emails on a regular basis.

For example, if you run a newsletter where you share a round-up of resources each week, now you can add your headings directly into your email template. Here's what that might look like:

How to set up default content for a classic email template

To add default content, start by going to your Email Templates. Open an existing classic email template or create a new one.

In the template editor for your classic email template, you'll be able to enter your default content between the tags that say “Start of default content” and “End of default content”.

Once you've added your default content, your email template might look something like this:

Be sure to click the “Save” button to save your template changes.

Using your default content

Now it's time to create the content for your email (either a Broadcast or a Sequence) based on its default content.

1. Use your classic email template in your email

In the email editor, set up your email with the classic email template you've added the default content to.

If you're creating a Broadcast, you can change its template to your classic email template using the Template setting in the Broadcast editor's right sidebar.

If you're creating a new Sequence, select your classic email template when you're asked to choose a default template for it:

Alternatively, use your Sequence's per-email Template setting to set up your classic template for only specific emails in your Sequence.

2. Add your email content!

You should now see your default content in your email body. From there, you can add your email content around the default content:

There you have it! Your default content is set up and email formatting should feel a lot easier.

NOTE: Changing a template's default content won’t affect the content of any existing email drafts that use that template. It affects only new email drafts you create moving forward.
