First-party cookie blocking is a built-in mechanism that automatically blocks non-necessary cookies set on your website’s root domain until the user gives consent.
A first-party cookie is set by the domain the user is visiting, which means it belongs to your website, for example, yourdomain.com.
The root domain is the main part of your website’s address. For example, in https://cookieinformation.com/about, the root domain is cookieinformation.com.
Before you start
Here are a few things to know before you start:
First-party cookie blocking is turned on by default in Cookie Information.
First-party cookie blocking applies to first-party cookies, those set directly by your website.
You can identify first-party cookies if your company is listed as the data processor.
If you're not sure, you can check:
- In the consent popup: look for cookies listed under your domain.
- In the application menu: check for cookies set directly on the root domain.
You can use your browser’s developer tools to inspect them.
First-party cookie blocking blocks the cookie, not the script. This means JavaScript or tracking code from third-party services may still run, but any functionality that depends on setting a cookie won't work until the user gives consent.
It also blocks custom cookies, which are those you add manually, for example, cookies set only after a user logs in, or those that weren't detected during scanning if they were created as first-party cookies.
First-party cookie blocking doesn’t block:
Server-side cookies, both first- and third-party
Third-party cookies set via iFrames, such as those from Facebook or Google However, if Google or Facebook sets a first-party cookie on your domain, it will be blocked.
Don't change the category of the necessary cookie created by Cookie Information. This is required for first-party cookie blocking to work properly.
