The problem
If you try to run the Craftsman Software Update while Contract Writer is open — even if it's just running quietly in the background — the update will fail or appear to do nothing. This is the most common cause of update errors.
The fix
Follow these steps in order:
Then make sure the program isn't still running in the background.
Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager.Look for "Contract Writer" in the list of running programs.
If you see it, right-click it and select End Task.
3. Open the Craftsman Software Update program directly.
Click the Windows Start menu and type
Craftsman Software Update.Click the program when it appears in the search results (don't open it through Contract Writer).
4. Run the update.
With Contract Writer fully closed, run the update program.
Wait for it to finish before reopening Contract Writer.
5. If it still doesn't work, restart your computer.
This clears out any leftover background processes that Task Manager might miss.
After restarting, repeat steps 3-4.
Why this happens
Contract Writer locks certain files while it's running. The update program needs to replace those same files, so if Contract Writer is open — even minimized or "closed" without fully exiting — the update can't make changes and will silently fail.
Still stuck?
If you've tried all the steps above and the update still won't complete, reach out to our support team and include a screenshot of the error message. That helps us see exactly what's happening on your end.
