Including subcontract ("total only") costs in your estimate changes the way totals and subtotals are accumulated. With no "total only" costs in an estimate, the sum of material, labor and equipment columns will equal the sum in the total column. If there are "total only" cost in your estimate, the "crossfoot" doesn't work.

For example, the Hill Street estimate includes $3,500 for subcontracted work in the total column. The subtotal for slab prep is accurate but is not the sum of labor, material and equipment costs for slab prep.
