What to Expect

The English Language Proficiency Test is designed to assess your ability to understand and communicate in English. Specifically, it will assess your reading, listening, and writing abilities in English. It is a modular test, meaning that you may be asked reading questions only, writing questions only, listening questions only, or a combination of two or three types. This will depend on the job you are applying for.

Depending on the specific job you are applying for, the English Language Proficiency Test may take up to 20-25 minutes to complete.

How to Prepare

The Writing questions will ask you to type your answer into a text box, so please make sure that you have a working keyboard.

The Listening questions will ask you to listen to audio recordings, so please make sure that you have working speakers or headphones.

Before you start the English Language Proficiency Test, we will provide you with practice questions and a chance to check your audio for Listening questions. We advise you not to start the assessment until you have confirmed that your audio is working.

The best thing you can do to prepare is ensure you’re in a comfortable, distraction-free environment, and that you have read all the instructions carefully.

Troubleshooting

General Issues

If you’ve ensured that your device meets the system and browser requirements and you are still experiencing issues, we suggest trying the following:

  • Check your browser version is up to date by checking in browser settings, or by using the following site: https://www.whatismybrowser.com/ (Please go through with the update if available)

  • Ensure there are no file transfers (downloading/uploading) occurring

  • Pause/close any video streams (Youtube, Netflix, etc)

  • Have as few windows and tabs open as possible

  • Use physical (ethernet) connection if possible

  • Update/Restart computer

  • Update/Restart router

  • Move locations for better reception for Hotspot/stronger network

  • Switch browser

If issues persist, please try accessing the assessment via a different device or connection (for example, mobile/hotspot).

Audio Issues

If you are unable to hear anything when pressing the sound check button, we suggest trying the following:

  • Switch to Google Chrome and check that your browser is up to date

  • Check that your volume on your device is not muted or set to 0

  • Check your browser tab isn't muted

  • Turn up your volume until you can hear the sound check

  • Make sure that your sound is outputting to the device that you expect (e.g., a pair of headphones, Bluetooth speakers)

Minimum Screen Size

These assessments require a minimum amount of screen space to be accessed. If we detect that your display does not fit the entire application a warning will be triggered. The application will require you to increase the amount of screen space available to accommodate the entirety of the assessment for the best possible experience.

The minimum viewport size required to run the English Language Proficiency Test is 534 x 320.

To resolve this issue, the device browser needs to be put into ‘full screen mode’ which will hide the toolbars and allow full use of the screen size. If you are unsure how to enable full screen mode, we recommend searching online for your device manufacturer’s official guide as the process varies depending on the make and model of your device.

If the physical size of your screen does not meet these minimum size requirements, enabling full-screen mode will not resolve the problem. You will need to switch to a device that does meet these requirements before you can access the assessment.
