Do I need a UK bank account to run a project on Crowdfunder?

Updated over 2 months ago

Crowdfunding on Crowdfunder.co.uk: UK Bank Account Requirements

To Crowdfund on our website, Crowdfunder.co.uk, you must have a UK-registered bank account linked to an address in the UK to run a project with us. Non-UK-registered banks and online payment platforms, such as Revolut or Wise, do not meet this requirement. If you do not have a UK bank account, you will not be able to use the platform.

🇺🇸 Important: If you have a valid USA bank account linked to a USA address, you can crowdfund on Crowdfunder.com

Reasoning Behind the Restrictions

Crowdfunder's payment provider is configured to support UK-registered bank accounts to ensure compliance with financial regulations and provide a seamless payment process for users. Non-UK banks and online platforms often fail to meet the requisite technical or regulatory standards.

Unsupported Banks and Platforms

The following accounts cannot be used with Crowdfunder UK projects:

  • Banks based in a British Crown Dependency (such as Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man) or in a British Overseas Territory like the British Virgin Islands

  • Banks based outside the United Kingdom, such as those in Ireland (e.g., AIB).

  • Online payment platforms, including:

    • Revolut

    • Wise

    • Payoneer

These exclusions are due to compatibility requirements with Crowdfunder's UK-centric payment infrastructure.

You will still be able to accept international payments on your project from major international debit and credit cards.

FAQs

  1. Why isn't my Revolut account supported?

  • Revolut functions as an online payment platform and does not typically qualify as a UK-registered bank account.

  1. Can I use an Irish bank account for Crowdfunder?

  • No, accounts from Irish banks, such as AIB, are not compatible with Crowdfunder. Only UK-based bank accounts meet the requirements.

  1. Are any online platforms supported for payments?

  • No, platforms like Wise, Payoneer, and Revolut are not supported. You must use a traditional UK-registered bank account.

  1. Can I use someone else’s UK bank account for Crowdfunder?

  • Yes, you can use a third-party UK bank account provided you have the account owner’s explicit permission. Note that this is done at your own risk, and Crowdfunder cannot mediate any resulting disputes.

For individuals who live outside the UK and do not possess a UK bank account/address, we recommend considering alternative crowdfunding platforms available locally in your country or region.
