How Do I Start Crowdfunding?

What do I need to know before I begin?

Updated over a week ago

Before you launch your crowdfunding project, it's helpful to get familiar with some of the key terms you'll come across along the way.

Project

A project is your Crowdfunder campaign – it’s the effort you're raising money for. This could be anything from building a community centre or opening a café, to publishing a book, launching a business, recording an album or supporting a charitable cause.

Project Owner

The project owner is the person who creates and manages the campaign from start to finish.

Supporters

Supporters are the people who choose to back your project by making a pledge or donation. Often, these are friends, family, colleagues, or members of your local community. Others may be long-time supporters of your organisation or simply inspired by your idea or rewards.

Pledging

When someone pledges to your project, they’re doing more than just donating—they’re helping to bring something new to life. Unlike buying a product from a shop, pledging is about supporting a vision and becoming part of its journey.

Target

Your target is the total amount of money you're aiming to raise. This can be the minimum needed to make your project a reality, or a larger goal to help you go further with your cause.

Rewards

Rewards are a way to say thank you to your supporters. They’re often unique to your project—like exclusive items, experiences, services, or sponsorship opportunities. Think of them as a small piece of your project that your backers can take home.

Crowdfunding Options on Crowdfunder

You can choose from two different funding types on our platform:

  • All or Nothing: You only receive the money if your project hits its target. This option is ideal for projects that need a specific amount of funding to go ahead.

  • Flexible Funding: You keep whatever funds you raise (minus fees), even if you don’t reach your target. This is a great choice for personal campaigns or charitable causes.

Boost Your Project with +Extra Funding

If your project qualifies, you may be able to access +Extra funding—match funding from our partners in the public and private sectors. It's a great way to give your campaign an extra lift.
