Overview
Your 12-word recovery phrase (often called a "seed phrase") is the Master Key to your TAO. If you lose your computer or forget your password, this phrase is the only way to recover your funds. Because Crucible is a self-custody wallet, we cannot reset your password or recover this phrase for you.
To keep your assets safe, follow these industry-standard "Cold Storage" rules.
1. The "Air-Gap" Rule (No Digital Copies)
The most common way crypto is stolen is through "digital discovery." Hackers use malware to scan for 12-word patterns in your files.
DO NOT take a photo or screenshot of your phrase.
DO NOT save it in a Notes app, Google Doc, or Email.
DO NOT type it into a password manager or save it in a "private" cloud folder.
DO NOT say it out loud near smart speakers (like Alexa or Siri) or cameras.
Industry Standard: Your phrase should never exist in a digital format. It should only move from the Crucible screen directly to physical media.
2. Use Durable Physical Media
Paper is the easiest way to start, but it is fragile.
Handwrite it clearly: Use a permanent, non-smear pen.
Double-check the order: The order of the words is just as important as the words themselves. Number them 1 through 12.
Consider Metal: For long-term security, many users use a "Seed Plate" (stainless steel or titanium). These are fireproof and waterproof, ensuring your backup survives even if your home does not.
3. Create Redundancy (The 2-Location Rule)
If you only have one copy and it is lost in a fire or flood, your TAO is gone.
Create two copies: Store them in two separate, secure geographic locations.
Example: Keep one in a home safe and another in a secure location elsewhere (like a bank safety deposit box or a trusted family member's safe).
4. The "Never Share" Absolute
This is the most important rule in crypto.
Crucible Labs will NEVER ask for your recovery phrase. * No support agent, website, or "verification link" is legitimate if it asks for these 12 words.
Anyone who has these words has total control over your TAO. Treat them like the cash in your wallet.
