Managing your extension password

Updated over a month ago

Overview

Your Crucible extension password acts like a "screen lock" for your wallet. It prevents anyone with physical access to your computer from seeing your balance or moving your TAO.

Because Crucible is a self-custody tool, this password is local only. It is stored on your browser and is never sent to Crucible Labs servers.

โš ๏ธ Multi-Wallet Warning

Crucible allows you to manage multiple wallets within one extension. However, it is important to remember that:

  • One password unlocks everything in the extension.

  • But one seed phrase DOES NOT recover everything. If you have multiple wallets (e.g., a "Staking" wallet and a "DCA" wallet), they likely have different 12-word recovery phrases.

How to Reset a Forgotten Password

Currently, there is no "Change Password" button in the settings. To reset your password, you must remove and reinstall the extension.

STOP: Do not uninstall until you read this!

Uninstalling the extension wipes all wallet data from your browser. Before you proceed, you must verify that you have the 12-word recovery phrase for EVERY wallet currently listed in your extension.

If you have three wallets but only have the phrase for one, you will lose the other two wallets forever when you uninstall.

Step-by-Step Reset:

  1. Audit Your Phrases: Physically locate the recovery phrases for every wallet you manage in Crucible.

  2. Remove the Extension: Right-click the Crucible icon in your Chrome toolbar and select "Remove from Chrome."

  3. Reinstall: Download Crucible again from the official Chrome Web Store.

  4. Import Your Wallets: Select "Import Wallet" and enter the phrase for your primary account.

  5. Set New Password: You will be prompted to create a brand new extension password.

  6. Add Additional Wallets: Once inside, use the "Import" function to add your other wallets back in one by one.

Security Best Practices

  • Password vs. Phrase: Remember, your password is just for convenience. Your 12-word phrase is your actual master key.

  • Manual Lock: If you leave your computer, click the menu icon in the extension and select Lock to require a password for re-entry.

  • Write it Down: Since you cannot "reset" this password via email, make sure your 12-word phrases are backed up on paper or metal in a secure location.
