Managing multiple wallets

Updated over a month ago

Overview

Crucible allows you to manage multiple wallets within one extension. This is useful for separating your main funds from your Smart Allocator experiments. However, managing multiple wallets significantly increases your responsibility to maintain accurate backups.

1. Multiple Wallets = Multiple Phrases

It is a common mistake to assume that a single 12-word phrase covers every wallet visible in your extension.

  • The Rule: If you imported wallets from different sources (e.g., one from a mobile app and one created new in Crucible), they have completely different recovery phrases.

  • The Risk: If you only save the phrase for your first wallet and then delete the extension, any other imported wallets will be lost forever.

2. The "Pre-Reset" Audit

Before you ever uninstall Crucible, clear your browser cache, or move to a new computer, you must perform a Wallet Audit:

  1. Open the Extension: Look at the total number of wallets listed in your account switcher.

  2. Verify Every Phrase: Ensure you have a physical backup for the specific 12-word phrase belonging to every address shown.

  3. Confirm Ledger Links: If some wallets are Ledger-protected, ensure you have your physical Ledger device and its separate 24-word recovery sheet.

3. Privacy & OpSec (Naming Your Wallets)

Crucible allows you to give each wallet a nickname to help you tell them apart.

  • Keep it Generic: For your own safety, avoid names that describe the amount of TAO or the purpose of the wallet (e.g., avoid "1000 TAO Savings" or "DCA Wallet").

  • Screen Safety: These names are visible when you open the extension. Using generic names prevents bystanders or screen-sharers from identifying your most valuable accounts.

  • Local Only: These names are only stored on your browser. If you move to a new computer and re-import your wallets, you will need to name them again.

4. Software vs. Ledger Accounts

If you manage a mix of wallet types, remember they are backed up differently:

  • Crucible Software Wallets: Backed up by a 12-word phrase you wrote down.

  • Ledger Wallets: Backed up by the 24-word phrase provided by your Ledger device.

  • Crucible cannot "see" your Ledger phrase. Even if you have backed up your Crucible software wallet, that backup will not recover your Ledger-protected TAO.
