Learn how to use Blackmagic Fairlight Live with the Cuez Automator

What is Fairlight Live?

Fairlight Live is a software-based live audio mixer from Blackmagic Design. It scales from simple podcast setups to large live broadcasts, handling hundreds of channels alongside commentary, crowd mics, IFB, and talkback β€” all with built-in effects, snapshots, and mix-minus feed support.

The Cuez Automator connects to Fairlight Live over OSC (TCP), enabling automated level control, muting, fading, and preset management directly from within the rundown.

Setting up Fairlight Live

Before adding the device in the Automator, verify the OSC settings in Fairlight Live. Go to File β†’ Show Settings and confirm that the OSC port is set to 8000 and the server mode is set to TCP. These are the default values, so no changes should be needed unless your setup differs.

Adding a Fairlight Live 'device' to the Automator

In the top right corner of the Automator, we see 'Devices' β€” this can be either red or green depending on the status of the configured devices. Click it and select 'Add device'.
Next, select 'Blackmagic Fairlight' from the 'Device type' dropdown list, then give it a name.

Once the device is selected and given a name, we will see all the fields needed to configure it so it can be used with the Automator.

Basic device configuration

You can enable or disable the Fairlight Live device and enter the 'Host name' and 'Port'. Once these settings have been entered, the device should show as online (green) in the top right corner.

The default hostname is 127.0.0.1 (localhost). If Fairlight Live is running on a different computer than Automator, enter the IP address of the computer running Fairlight Live instead. The default port is 8000, matching Fairlight Live's OSC settings out of the box. If these have been changed in Fairlight Live, enter the same values here.

Configuring actions

Troubleshooting

If the Fairlight Live device shows as offline in the Automator, check the following:

  • Fairlight Live running β€” Fairlight Live must be running for the device to be detected. Automator cannot connect if the application is closed.

  • OSC settings β€” confirm the port and server mode in Fairlight Live (File β†’ Show Settings) match the values configured in the Automator (default: port 8000, TCP).

  • Firewall β€” confirm that port 8000 is not being blocked by the OS or a local firewall.

  • Fairlight Live version β€” confirm you are running Public Beta 3 or later. Earlier versions do not include OSC support and cannot communicate with the Automator.
