Grass Valley NV9000 and the Automator

Learn how to control the Grass Valley NV9000 with the Cuez Automator

What is the Grass Valley NV9000?

The Grass Valley NV9000 is a router system controller used to manage large-scale routing systems in broadcast facilities. The Cuez Automator can control an NV9000 directly — routing any source to any destination, and firing pre-configured salvos. Source and destination names are read live from the controller when the device connects.

Adding a GV NV9000 'device' to the Automator

In the top right corner of the Automator, we see 'Devices' — this can be either in red or green depending on the status of the configured devices. Click it and select 'Add device'.

Next, select 'GV NV9000' from the 'Device type' dropdown list, then give it a name.

Basic device configuration

Enter the Controller address of the NV9000 system on your local network. The Port defaults to 9193, matching the NV9000's standard control port. The User ID defaults to 0xFEDCBA98 and identifies the Automator as a client to the router controller. The Primary level ID defaults to 1 and sets which routing level (signal type) the device controls by default.

Once the settings have been entered correctly, the device should show as 'Online' (green) instead of 'Offline' (red).

Configuring actions

The next step is then to configure each Item and Block configuration with the (set of) functions you want to perform on the NV9000 when triggering the Item or Block; more general information on that is available in this article.

Available functions

Route — Routes a source to a destination. Configured with Source and Destination, using the names read live from the controller.

Fire salvo — Fires a pre-configured salvo (a saved group of routes) on the controller. Configured with Salvo ID.

Troubleshooting

If the GV NV9000 device shows 'Offline' in the Automator:

  • Confirm the NV9000 controller is powered on and reachable on the same network as the machine running the Cuez Automator.

  • Double-check the Controller address and Port match what's configured on the NV9000 side — the default port is 9193, but this can be changed on either end.

  • Confirm the User ID and Primary level ID match what the router controller expects for this client connection.

  • If a firewall or network security tool is active on either machine, make sure port 9193 isn't being blocked.
