Take a pen and paper.

Every night, just before you sleep, write down something positive or joyous that happened that day. Something that brought a smile to your face, that brightened your day.

The more specific you are, the better.

Remember, this is not about what you have to be positive in your life. So don’t write about your significant other, your family, your job, your friends, etc. Instead, we want to elicit the joy from the smaller things in life.

A few examples:

  • While walking in the morning, perhaps you see a beautiful bird, more unusual than the pigeons and crows that we see on a daily basis. You might have a felt a jolt of surprise when spotting it, perhaps it reminded you of the beauty of nature.

  • Perhaps you bumped into an old friend or got a call from someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.

  • Maybe you watched kids laughing and playing on swings or slides, and it reminded you of times when you did the same with your friends.

Keep it small, it may have just been a fleeting moment. Don’t overthink it.

Anything that brought a smile or a moment of joy to your day. Keep a journal, write it down.
