Setting up a Prattley autodrafter – Step 3 - Setting up for drafting by weight

Follow these steps to set up your Prattley autodrafter for drafting. You can change these each time you set up for a drafting session

Updated over a week ago

This article applies to Prattley series 600 autodrafters:

  • 3-Way Swing Gate AutoDrafter

  • 5-Way Swing Gate AutoDrafter

  • 2-Way Electric AutoDrafter

  • 3-Way Slide Gate AutoDrafter

  • 3-Way Electric AutoDrafter

These autodrafters include a PAD6 control box and a 5000 indicator (JR5000, ID5000 or XR5000).

Now you will set up the 5000 indicator for drafting. The draft settings can be changed each time you set up for a drafting session, depending on what you want to achieve. First you will set up the drafting criteria, then define what will be displayed on the main Weighing screen.

Setting up for drafting

In this example, we will set up a 3 way drafting by weight using arrows to show the draft direction. We will not be capturing IDs during weighing.

📝 There are many other drafting setup options. For more details, see Drafting using a 5000 indicator.

To set up drafting:

  1. From the Home screen, press Settings > Drafting.

  2. Press Change other draft settings.

  3. Turn Drafting ON. Enable Show draft direction on weigh screen. Press Next.

  4. Enable Weight to draft by weight. Press Next.

  5. Select the number of ways you want to draft e.g. 3. Press Next.

  6. Select the way you want to show draft direction - pens or arrows. Press Next.

  7. Select when you would like to draft animals. Because we are not capturing IDs or other information during our drafting session, we will use ID optional, do not wait for ID. Press Next.

  8. Press Finish.

  9. Set the drafting (weight range) rules, drafting directions and optional direction labels (e.g. L, M, R).

  10. Press the Weigh button to save your changes and go to the Weighing screen.

You are now ready to set up the Weighing screen.

📝 If you are weighing lambs or calves (very light loads) and you require extra precision, you may want to modify the Resolution to 0.1 or 0.2 kg in the weighing settings.

Setting up the Weighing screen

In this example, we are just recording weights without IDs, so no other information will be available for us to view or record. However, if you are setting up a drafting session and recording IDs, some of these fields could be useful.

To set up the indicator Weighing screen:

  1. From the Home screen, press Settings > Information to display and record:

  2. Scroll through the list of items and select fields you wish to display on the Weighing screen.

  3. In this example we have only selected Count (to view the total number of animals recorded in the drafting session). Press ENTER to select/deselect fields as required.

You are now ready to start your drafting session from the Weighing screen (reflecting above field selections):

🤚 Before you start drafting, check that the indicator and PAD6 are on and paired:
