Setting up a Wi-Fi connection for use with your energizer

Using a Wi-Fi connection with your energizer provides you with ultimate control of your electric fence system.

Using a Wi-Fi connection with your energizer means that you can:

  • receive notifications if your fence goes down

  • control your energizer from wherever you are.

Before you start

In order to use your energizer with Wi-Fi, you need to have a Wi-Fi network available at the location where your energizer is going to be installed (e.g. your shed).

Considerations before installing a Wi-Fi network

There are various Wi-Fi network setup options. We recommend speaking with an IT consultant to find out which option is best for you. $ = cost πŸ‘ = reliability

  • If you already have cellphone coverage (3G, 4G or 5G), a router or dongle can be installed at the energizer location, creating a new Wi-Fi network. You will need to purchase a SIM card and pay ongoing data charges. $ ,πŸ‘πŸ‘

  • Repeater - If a Wi-Fi network is available near to the energizer location, you may be able to extend the coverage using a Wi-Fi repeater. $, πŸ‘

  • Ethernet cable option - An electrician can run an ethernet cable underground from an existing router to the energizer location (e.g. your shed). A Wi-Fi network can then be set up there. $$$ ,πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

  • Wireless bridge with two devices - One device is connected to the router and another one is installed at the energizer location (e.g. your shed). Each device beams a signal to the other, making a bridge between the two devices. A Wi-Fi network can then be set up at the energizer location. $$ ,πŸ‘πŸ‘

  • Wireless bridge with one device - One device beams directly to the Wi-Fi network, set up at the energizer location. This only works if the router is very close to the energizer location (less than 20-30 m). $ ,πŸ‘

  • If a nearby building with Wi-Fi coverage shares the same electrical box as the energizer, you may be able to use Wi-Fi-over-power. With this setup, one device is installed in the building with Wi-Fi coverage, then the internet is pushed along the power cables until it reaches the energizer location where a second device then turns this into a Wi-Fi network. $$$ ,πŸ‘πŸ‘
