The DE-CIX Service Insights System is available for all DE-CIX Exchanges in Europe (except our partner Exchanges Berlin and Moscow) and the United States. It measures all traffic that is coming in and out of customer ports with IPFIX.

In the following, we will give you a general overview and explain the available selection criteria.

How we measure

IPFIX is a packet sampling technology that selects and examines every 10,000th packet. Based on the packets sampled, traffic relationships between customers can be calculated. IP addresses are not processed or stored.

The measurement interval is five minutes, and the traffic values measured are kept for seven days. After this time, these traffic values are aggregated to hourly values. The hourly values are kept for one month, and after this time, the traffic values are aggregated to daily values, which are kept permanently. Please note that graphs can include different values (e.g. both 5 minute values and hourly values), depending on the selected timeframe.

Changes can be seen within ten minutes

Operational changes to the DE-CIX infrastructure, such as setting up a new customer or a customer adding a new port to an existing LAG, are reflected in the DE-CIX Service Insights System within ten minutes. In the case of changes, such as adding or replacing ports to your service portfolio, the traffic history will remain available.
The processing time to receive traffic values from a switch and store them in the database so that they can be displayed is about five minutes. The dates presented are based on the UTC time zone.

Definition of IN and OUT traffic

IN traffic is the amount of traffic coming from the customer network going into the DE-CIX infrastructure, OUT traffic is the amount of traffic coming out of the DE-CIX infrastructure going into the customer network.

Selection criteria

GlobePEER service statistics

The following options are available to analyze the traffic that goes in or out of the GlobePEER service configured on your port(s):

  1. Select a port, in the case that you have more than one port on the DE-CIX infrastructure

  2. Select the IP version of the traffic (IPv4 or IPv6)

  3. Select the view “packet per second” or “bits per second”

  4. Note: Changes in the fields above are only effective if you click on the select button

  5. Select the timeframe by selecting dates, or

  6. Select the timeframe by selecting pre-defined values; these pre-defined values (e.g. year, month, or week) take the current date as the basis, or

  7. Select the timeframe by clicking in the navigation bar.

The in and out traffic values are displayed in a graph in the middle of the page. The granularity of data will vary depending on the time range you have chosen. The minimum, maximum, and average values for the traffic selected are automatically calculated and shown below the graph. Depending on the timeframe chosen, minimum, maximum, and average values can differ.

Traffic relationship statistics

The following options are available to analyze your traffic relationships with up to five peers:

  1. Select a port, in the case that you have more than one port on the DE-CIX infrastructure.

  2. Select the view “packet per second” or “bits per second”

  3. Note: Changes in the fields above are only effective if you click on the select button

  4. Select the timeframe by selecting dates, or

  5. Select the timeframe by selecting pre-defined values; these pre-defined values always take the current date as basis, or

  6. Select the timeframe by clicking in the navigation bar.

  7. Up to five peers can be selected for which traffic relationships can be shown. You can easily search for peers and select them.

  8. Changes are only effective and statistics are reloaded if you click on the load data button

The in and out traffic values are displayed in the middle of the page. If you select more than one peer, the traffic values for all are displayed simultaneously.
