How to use Delve's AI Chat

What is AI Assistant Chat

With AI Chat, you can ask questions about your coded snippets. Think of it like a research assistant who can help you collaborate on ideas, and offer suggestions for ways you can code.

What can AI Assistant Chat do?

AI Assistant Chat is a great tool to help you brainstorm and come up with new ways to view your data. There are many ways you can use AI Chat, but here are some examples of what AI Assistant Chat can do:

  1. Generate ideas for sub-codes

  2. Generate ideas for new codes

  3. Find quotes for your report

  4. Write code descriptions

  5. Summarize a collection of snippets

  6. Uncover snippet outliers

AI Assistant Chat cannot fully automate your research

While AI Assistant Chat can do many things, it cannot fully automate your research. It does not understand the context of your research study, the context behind your data, and the goals of your analysis. You still need to deeply understand your own research study and be familiar with your data in order to use AI Assistant Chat effectively.

Best practices and tips for using AI Assistant Chat

  1. Be familiar with your research goals and objectives.

  2. Be familiar with your data.

    1. Double check if the supporting snippets AI Chat provides are actually relevant to the point it's making. Know the context behind your data and transcripts to see if AI is interpreting it appropriately.

  3. Don't take the answers at face value. Evaluate if answers are accurate and relevant.

    1. AI is known to hallucinate, and AI Assistant is not an exception to this. We recommend that you evaluate each answer to see if it looks accurate and relevant to you. If it's not, ask again!

How do I use AI Assistant Chat?

Step 1. Click on "AI Chat" in the left hand menu

Step 2. Select Filters

Select which coded snippets the AI should look at for it's answer. You can select "Codes", and it will include any coded snippet under that code, and/or transcripts, where it will include any coded snippets in those transcripts.

By default, AI Assistant Chat answer your question based on as many coded snippets in your project as it can, but it has limitations for how many it can look at. For higher quality answers, we recommend narrowing down which coded snippets AI should focus on.

Step 3. Ask a question

Type your question into the text box. For example, type "Give me ideas for themes."

Step 4. Ask follow up questions

Ask follow up questions if you want! Here are some types of follow up questions you can ask:

  • Ask for clarification: Give me the answer again but with explanations for each point.

    • Explain why you....

  • Change the format of the answer: Provide the answer for me in table format.

Step 5. Code your snippets (optional)

  • Click on "See x supporting snippets"

  • Click on a snippet

  • Click on a code

  • Now it's coded!
