When to Use Hardware Wickets
For standalone setups or environments without a hypervisor, Hardware Ubuntu Wickets are a reliable choice. Customers are welcome to propose their own hardware preferences to meet specific site requirements. When Dispel provides discounted hardware, it arrives fully configured—requiring only a simple plug-in for installation.
Guide Overview
This guide assumes you have received the Wicket ISO file from the Dispel team. If Dispel is shipping you hardware to use, the hardware will already be loaded with the Wicket's ISO and you will only need to turn on the hardware. However, if you are using your own hardware, Dispel will either ship you a bootable USB, or will send you a Wicket ISO file to flash onto your own USB depending on your preferences.
This walkthrough is broken down into three sections:
Creating the Bootable USB
Installing and configuring the Dispel Wicket ISO image onto the SEL
Verifying successful connection to the Dispel Network
Pre-Requisite: Downloading the Ubuntu Wicket ISO
If you will be flashing the Wicket ISO onto a bootable USB yourself, please ensure that your downloaded iso file is not corrupted. To verify the integrity of your downloaded Wicket ISO file prior to installation, visit the guide linked below.
Installation Process
Step 1: Create the Bootable USB
💡 If Dispel has shipped you a Bootable USB to use on your own SEL, skip to Step 2. The USB will already have the ISO flashed onto it.
Download & install Rufus: https://rufus.ie/en/.
This section can be accomplished with many different tools such as balenaEtcher, so feel free to use your favorite tool for creating a bootable USB.
Ensure your USB drive is plugged into your computer.
Select your USB drive from the Device dropdown.
Click the select button on the right side of the screen, then browse to and select your ISO.
There will be several popups - you can use the recommended / default options, no changes necessary.
Step 2: Installing and Configuring the Wicket ISO
💡 If Dispel has shipped you hardware, the team will have already loaded the ISO onto the SEL. Simply power on the SEL and connect it to a keyboard and monitor. Then, proceed to Step 3.
Turn off the SEL and insert the USB we just configured with the bootable image.
Ensure you have a keyboard & monitor plugged into the SEL, and boot it up.
As it is booting up, press F2 to enter the boot menu & select the bootable USB in the list.
The ISO will automatically configure the wicket and power off the machine.
Ensure all ethernet cables are in correct ports, as the ISO configures it’s NICs on initial boot.
Remove the USB drive and reboot the machine.
When boot up is finished you will be presented with a login screen. Login with the credentials you were provided with the ISO.
Step 3: Verifying Successful Connection to the Dispel Network
After 2 Minutes: In the command line, type
ifconfig
.Verify that two interfaces named
tun100
andtun101
appear.Verify the Network Interface addresses are correct.
Verify the wicket can reach the Dispel Production Server with
ping 10.100.1.1
.A Dispel team member should verify that the Wicket is visible from the Moving Target Defense Region (Dispel Network).
