What is RDR (Rapid Dispute Resolution)?

Learn what RDR is, how it resolves eligible Visa disputes before they become chargebacks, how it differs from CDRN and Ethoca alerts, and how RDR cases appear in your Stripe or Shopify dashboard. For merchants enrolled in Disputifier's alert programs.

Understanding RDR

What is RDR?

RDR (Rapid Dispute Resolution) is a chargeback prevention program owned by Verifi, a Visa company. RDR is the renamed, upgraded replacement for Verifi's earlier program, the Cardholder Dispute Resolution Network (CDRN). Visa rebranded several of its dispute tools recently, and CDRN becoming RDR was one of those changes. Some merchants are still enrolled in CDRN, but RDR has largely replaced it going forward.

RDR only applies to disputes on Visa transactions. It does not cover Mastercard, American Express, or Discover . See "Does RDR work with Mastercard, American Express, and Discover?" below.

Like CDRN and Ethoca alerts, RDR is distributed to merchants through technology resellers, including Disputifier.

How does RDR work?

When a customer disputes a charge with their issuing bank (the bank that issued the customer's card), the issuing bank submits that dispute to Visa Resolve Online (VROL), Visa's dispute-processing system. If the disputed transaction is enrolled in RDR and meets your predefined refund criteria, RDR automatically triggers your acquiring bank (also called your acquirer, the bank that processes your payments, such as Stripe or Shopify Payments) to issue a credit to the customer. This happens before the dispute becomes a formal chargeback, so the case never reaches your chargeback ratio.

RDR operates from the acquirer side of the transaction: enrollment and refund decisions are managed through your payment processor, not directly with the customer's issuing bank. This is a key difference from Ethoca alerts, which come from the issuer side. See "How is RDR different from CDRN and Ethoca alerts?" below.

Why enroll in RDR?

Enrolling in RDR keeps your Visa dispute count low, since RDR cases don't count toward your chargeback ratio on the Visa network. (See the Shopify note below if your dashboard's chargeback rate still shows RDR cases.) Enrolling also signals to your acquirer that you're proactively resolving disputes when they arise, which supports your standing with your payment processor.

What are the benefits of RDR?

The table below shows how RDR benefits each party involved in a disputed transaction.

Party

Benefit

Customers

Receive a credit quickly, without waiting for a full chargeback investigation.

Issuing banks

See disputes resolved fast, which supports customer satisfaction and trust.

Acquiring banks

Stay compliant with card network monitoring programs.

Merchants

Are freed from manually reviewing and refunding each individual dispute.

How does RDR change my dispute response process? Before RDR, merchants had to manually review each dispute and decide whether to refund it or risk a chargeback, along with its associated fees and penalties. With RDR, once a transaction meets your predefined criteria, your acquirer is automatically notified to send the customer's credit to the issuing bank, you don't need to review or respond to the case yourself, and it does not count toward your dispute ratio.

How does RDR change the customer's experience? Before RDR, a cardholder typically waited 2 to 5 business days, or longer, to receive a refund after filing a dispute. With RDR, the cardholder receives their credit as soon as the issuing bank submits the dispute to VROL and it matches your predefined criteria, often immediately.

Does RDR prevent chargebacks?

Yes. RDR resolves eligible disputes by issuing a refund automatically, before they can escalate into a chargeback. Disputes resolved through RDR do not count toward your chargeback ratio on the Visa network itself. If you use Shopify, your Shopify dashboard's own chargeback rate may still include RDR cases. See "Why does an RDR case still show as a chargeback in Shopify's chargeback rate?" below.

Does RDR work with Mastercard, American Express, and Discover?

No. RDR is a Verifi product built specifically to handle disputes processed through Visa Resolve Online (VROL), so it only applies to Visa transactions. It does not extend to American Express, Mastercard, or Discover disputes.

RDR compared to other alerts

How is RDR different from CDRN and Ethoca alerts?

The table below compares RDR to the two other alert programs Disputifier offers, so you know which network handles which dispute.

Program

Owned by

Card networks covered

How it resolves a dispute

RDR

Verifi (Visa)

Visa only

Automatically credits the cardholder through your acquirer, before a CDRN alert is even issued.

CDRN

Verifi (Visa)

Visa and some other networks

Sends an alert that is refunded through your payment gateway, automatically by Disputifier if you have auto-refund enabled, or manually by you if you handle alerts case by case. If RDR is not enrolled for a dispute, it falls back to this CDRN process.

Ethoca

Ethoca (Mastercard)

Mastercard and other major card brands, including Visa

Sends an alert that is refunded through your payment gateway, automatically by Disputifier if you have auto-refund enabled, or manually by you if you handle alerts case by case. Can overlap with RDR on Visa disputes. See "Why is my RDR volume lower than my Ethoca volume?" below.

RDR intervenes earlier than CDRN: it credits the cardholder directly and bypasses the manual refund step entirely. If a Visa dispute isn't eligible for RDR, it then follows the traditional CDRN path instead. On a Visa dispute where you also have Ethoca active, whichever alert arrives first is generally the one that resolves it. See below for what that means for your RDR volume.

When does an RDR case arrive, compared to Ethoca?

RDR cases typically arrive 6 to 8 days after Ethoca alerts for the same dispute, since RDR comes into play later in the payment process.

Why is my RDR volume lower than my Ethoca volume? Ethoca alerts cover Mastercard and other major card brands, including Visa. If you have both RDR and Ethoca active, a Visa dispute can technically be caught by either program, but because Ethoca alerts arrive 6 to 8 days earlier, Ethoca typically refunds the transaction first. Once that happens, there's nothing left for RDR to detect: the dispute was already resolved before RDR had a chance to trigger, so it never registers as an RDR case.

This is expected behavior, not a sign that RDR is missing disputes. If you're already refunding all of your Ethoca alerts, expect your RDR volume to be roughly 10–15% of your Ethoca alert volume, the share of Visa disputes Ethoca didn't already catch first.

Enrolling and processor compatibility

Which payment processors support RDR?

"Supports RDR" covers two different things, and it's worth understanding both before you enroll.

Can this processor enroll in RDR? Some payment processors and gateways run their own competing dispute-resolution program tied to specific BIN ranges (the digits that identify a card's issuing bank), for example, Shopify's Network Dispute Resolution Program (NDRP) today, or Airwallex's own equivalent program in the past. If a merchant's BINs are already enrolled in the processor's native program, Disputifier cannot also enroll them in Verifi's RDR service for those same BINs, the two programs can't run on the same BIN range at once.

If you use Shopify: Shopify generally supports RDR, but if you're already enrolled in Shopify's own NDRP, we won't be able to enroll you in RDR through Disputifier for those BINs. If you're not sure if you are enrolled in NDRP, Shopify can confirm this for you directly.

Does this processor recognize an RDR refund correctly in its own reporting? Separately, Visa and Mastercard do not classify RDR-refunded transactions as chargebacks for their own risk and fraud monitoring programs. However, not every payment processor's own dashboard reflects that the same way, since RDR refunds happen later in the process than a standard alert refund. Most modern processors recognize RDR refunds correctly; some older processors, such as Wells Fargo, do not.

The table below lists payment processors that are generally compatible with RDR enrollment through Disputifier.

Compatible processors

Stripe

Shopify*

Paddle

Maverick Payments

AirWallex

*Subject to the BIN-enrollment conflict above if you're already on Shopify's NDRP.

How does RDR appear in my dashboard?

Each payment processor labels RDR cases differently in its own dashboard. Most commonly, an RDR case appears as either "chargeback lost" or "unchallengeable dispute." Unlike RDR, Ethoca and CDRN alerts never appear as lost disputes in your dashboard, only RDR cases do.

How does RDR appear in Stripe?

If a transaction is resolved through RDR, Stripe sends you an email notifying you that the dispute is unchallengeable because the transaction was enrolled in Visa's RDR program.

In the Disputes section of your Stripe dashboard, RDR cases appear as "lost" disputes. Stripe does not include these cases in your overall dispute activity graph, since they were resolved through RDR rather than a standard chargeback.

How does RDR appear in Shopify?

If a transaction is resolved through RDR, Shopify displays it under the label "Chargeback resolved."

Why does an RDR case still show as a chargeback in Shopify's chargeback rate?

If you use Shopify, an RDR case may still be counted as a chargeback, or shown as "chargeback resolved", in Shopify's chargeback rate reporting. Shopify changed how it calculates this rate, and RDR cases can be included in it. As a result, your Shopify chargeback rate can go up even though the case was resolved through RDR.

💡 On the Visa network itself, RDR is treated differently from a standard chargeback. Because RDR is an automatic resolution program, Visa does not count RDR cases the same way in its own network monitoring ratios, so RDR still keeps the dispute off your Visa chargeback ratio, even if Shopify's own reporting shows it differently.
