Tags sit within Tag Categories. For example, a category called Colour of eyes might contain tags such as Blue, Green, and Brown.
Tags can store additional metadata, be time-bound, or represent positive or negative states. They can also be auto-managed using Auto Tagging rules (Professional plan only).
How Tags Work
When a Tag is added to a Constituent, you can click the Tag to view or edit additional details:
Start and End Dates
Leave blank for an open-ended tag.
Enter dates to restrict when the tag is considered active.
Excluded State
If Excluded = No, the tag is active (positive).
If Excluded = Yes, the tag represents the opposite meaning (negative).
For example, with a tag Potential Legacy Pledger:
Tag present, Excluded = No → the person is a potential pledger.
Tag present, Excluded = Yes → the person has declined to pledge.
Tag not present → you do not yet know.
Campaign
Record the Campaign responsible for the tag being added.
Notes
Add supporting context or internal comments.
Custom Fields
You may add custom fields to Tag Categories in Settings when creating or editing a category.
Highlighting Important Tags
You can pin a Tag so it always appears at the top of a Constituent’s profile.
This is useful for visibility of key indicators such as:
Major Donor
Volunteer
Vulnerable Supporter
Special Stewardship Group
(See Pinning a Tag for setup instructions.)
Auto Tagging (Professional Plan)
Tags can be automatically added or removed from Constituents based on defined rules, ideal for dynamic segmentation.
Examples of automated tagging:
Adding Lapsed Donor after 24 months of inactivity.
Tagging supporters who have opted into specific Purposes.
Applying seasonal or campaign-based tags when certain criteria are met.
