ELDT Basics: How Does It Work?

Unpack the essentials of ELDT and its role in your CDL journey.

Written by Marina Werner

Introduction

Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is an important part of the commercial driver's license process for certain first-time CDL applicants and applicants seeking specified endorsements. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) established minimum training standards for entry-level commercial drivers.

What Is ELDT?

ELDT is a set of federal requirements covering theory training and, for Class A, Class B, Passenger, and School Bus applicants, behind-the-wheel training. HazMat applicants are required to complete theory training only.

How Does ELDT Work at Driving-Tests.org?

Driving-Tests.org is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry as an online ELDT theory training provider. Our online ELDT theory training is currently available in all states and Washington, DC, except Washington and Pennsylvania.

Here's how the online theory portion works on our platform:

  • Enroll in an eligible CDL Premium program: Choose the program that matches the CDL class or endorsement you are seeking.

  • Complete the required course components: Work through the lessons, practice tests, and Exam Simulators. The Passing Probability Indicator estimates your readiness for the relevant knowledge test based on your study activity and practice performance.

  • Complete your theory training: Finish all required components and achieve a Passing Probability of at least 80%.

  • Reporting to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR): We electronically report your successful theory training completion to the TPR. This reporting is included in your eligible CDL Premium program.

  • Complete the appropriate next step: Class A, Class B, Passenger, and School Bus applicants must also complete any applicable behind-the-wheel training before the state-administered skills test. HazMat applicants must complete the required theory training before the state-administered knowledge test.

Conclusion

Driving-Tests.org provides the online theory portion of the applicable ELDT curriculum. Depending on your CDL class or endorsement, you may also need separate behind-the-wheel training and must meet your state's testing and licensing requirements.
