Learn how to track your progress throughout your ELDT course.

The federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements apply to certain first-time CDL applicants and applicants seeking specified endorsements. They establish minimum training standards for entry-level commercial drivers.

Driving-Tests.org is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry as an online ELDT theory training provider. We offer courses covering the applicable federal ELDT theory curriculum requirements.

Here's what you need to know about the ELDT training process:

What Does ELDT Training Include?

Applicable ELDT consists of theory training and, for Class A, Class B, Passenger, and School Bus applicants, behind-the-wheel training. HazMat applicants are required to complete theory training only.

  • Theory training: This is the part of ELDT that Driving-Tests.org provides. It covers the topics required by the applicable federal ELDT theory curriculum.

  • Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) training: This includes range and public-road instruction. Class A, Class B, Passenger, and School Bus applicants must complete the applicable BTW training with a separate provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

Why Is ELDT Required?

ELDT is intended to help entry-level drivers gain the knowledge and skills needed to operate commercial motor vehicles safely.

The Role of Driving-Tests.org

Driving-Tests.org provides the online theory portion of the applicable ELDT curriculum. Learners must separately complete any required behind-the-wheel training and state testing requirements.

  • Comprehensive theory training: Our 2-in-1 plans combine ELDT theory training with exam prep for different CDL classes and endorsements. They help you prepare for the applicable knowledge test and complete your ELDT theory training.

  • Completion reporting: After you complete all required course components and achieve a Passing Probability of at least 80%, we report your successful theory training completion to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). You can check the record on the TPR Check page.

Our online ELDT theory training is currently available in all states and Washington, DC, except Washington and Pennsylvania.

Completing the theory portion is one step in the ELDT process. Class A, Class B, Passenger, and School Bus applicants must also complete the applicable behind-the-wheel training before the state-administered skills test. HazMat applicants must complete the required theory training before the state-administered knowledge test.
