How to administer the Dystech word reading assessment

The Dystech Word Reading Assessment quickly measures your students' reading abilities and provides accurate and insightful information for your intervention strategy.

What is the Dystech Word Reading Assessment?

Dystech has combined 2 hours worth of traditional assessment into a 5-minute online word reading test, providing assessors with an accurate score for six reading measurements.

The assessment consists of 48 words, which will be displayed sequentially (one by one). The student will be required to read aloud each word on the screen while their voice is being recorded.

Preparation

You will need is a device with an internet connection and a microphone. Dystech is accessible on any browser and works best on your tablet, laptop or desktop.

  1. Once you have logged in you will arrive on the dashboard.

  2. Navigate to Students

  3. Click Start assessment on the student you'd like to administer an assessment. (See how to add a new student)

  4. Click Start Assessment under Word Reading Assessment

Assessment Set-up

  1. Place one chair in front of the computer screen (for the child) and one chair to the side (for you). You will need to easily access the computer’s mouse.

  2. Read the Student Instructions that will appear on the screen to the student and check for understanding. Encourage them to attempt to read every word.

  3. Remember not to talk or prompt the student to read during the assessment as it will interfere with the recording.

  4. At the bottom of the page, confirm that the environment is noise-free and Start Assessment

During the Assessment

⚠️ Make sure, when a word is on the screen that only the student read. No background noise or other voice should be recorded during that time.

  1. Press Start Assessment and click the Show word for the word to appear.

  2. If the student reads the word CORRECTLY, press Next Word 1 OR Keyboard Key A.

  3. If the students read the word INCORRECTLY, press Next Word 2 OR Keyboard Key S.

  4. The assessment will end after 7 consecutive incorrect answers. A report will be provided.

  5. You can cancel the assessment by pressing End assessment, this will end the assessment without providing any report.

  6. When the assessment finishes, congratulate the student and once they have left, select Go to Report or Return to Dashboard.
