Hierarchies can be built from the top down or from the bottom up.

If you choose Top down for example then you would start at a national level and then divide into regional levels and then divide the regional levels into local levels.

If you choose Bottom up for example then you would start at a local level and then join these to form regional levels and then join these to form national levels.

You can create Hierarchical Territories manually or from file. If you choose from file then the territory will always be built Top down.

It is Important to know that whatever direction you choose, the basic unit you work with remains the same. For example if you choose to work with the Zip code dataset in a Bottom up hierarchy then you will start with Zip codes at a local level, add these local levels together to form regional levels and add regional levels together to form National levels. All levels will be made up of Zip Codes.

Create Manually

  • Select the Region dataset you wish to use from the drop down.
  • Click on the Add Region Datasets button to add more region datasets from the Library.
  • Select a Point data set that you wish to use (note: this is optional)
  • Click on the Include Hierarchy check box to enable the hierarchy settings is you wish to create hierarchical territories.
  • Select the number of levels required (2 or 3)
  • Set the Level Orientation. This can be top down or bottom up.Top down level orientation structures territories on a global first hierarchy e.g. country sales areas filtering down to local sales areas.Bottom up level orientation structures territories on a global last hierarchy e.g. local sales areas filtering up to country sales areas.
  •  Click on the Complete button to open the Territory builder.

Top Down Hierarchical Territories

If you selected Top down then the first level you will create is Level 1 (e.g. National level)

There are two ways to add regions to your territory:

  • Click on a plus symbol in a region to add it to your Territory.
  • Click on the Area Select button beside the name of the territory you are editing in the Territory Panel  
  • Left click on the map at the start point and continue adding points as necessary to draw a shape that intersects with all of the regions you want to select.

A shape will be drawn over the map.

  • Click on the Confirm button to add all intersecting regions to your Territory.

The regions will also be added to the Table below the map.

Continue adding territories at this level by clicking on the Add Territory button in the Territory Panel. Once you have Level 1 Complete click on the Level tab at the top of the Map. At the top you will see your top level territory made up of the territories in Level 1

Left Click on the top level will give you three options:

  • Explore at Level 1 – This will show you the territories at Level 1. From here you can edit your territories
  • Add Below – This will add a new empty territory at Level 1
  • Delegate – This will allow you to delegate permission to create and edit the territories at this level

Once you have added the empty territory you can left click on this and you will get the following options:

  • Edit – this will allow you to edit the territory. You can edit the territories in the same way you created them.
  • Explore at level 2  – This will show you the territories at Level 2. From here you can edit your territories
  • Rename – this will allow you to rename the territory
  • Add Below – This will add a new empty territory at Level 2
  • Add at this level – This will add a new empty territory at Level 1
  • Delegate – This will allow you to delegate permission to create and edit the territories at this level
  • Remove  – this will allow you to remove the territory

Once you have added the empty territory at level 1 you can left click on this and you will get the following options:

  • Edit – this will allow you to edit the territory. You can edit the territories in the same way you created them.
  • Explore at level 3  – This will show you the territories at Level 3. From here you can edit your territories.
  • Rename – this will allow you to rename the territory
  • Move – you can drag the territory and drop it on to the territory at the level above
  • Add Below – This will add a new empty territory at Level 3
  • Add at this level – This will add a new empty territory at Level 2
  • Delegate – This will allow you to delegate permission to create and edit the territories at this level
  • Remove  – this will allow you to remove the territory

Once you have added the empty territory at level 2 you can left click on this and you will get the following options:

  • Edit – this will allow you to edit the territory. You can edit the territories in the same way you created them.
  • Rename – this will allow you to rename the territory
  • Move – you can drag the territory and drop it on to the territory at the level above
  • Add at this level – This will add a new empty territory at Level 3
  • Delegate – This will allow you to delegate permission to create and edit the territories at this level
  • Remove  – this will allow you to remove the territory

Bottom Up Hierarchical Territories

If you selected Bottom up then the first level you will create is Level 3 (e.g. Local level)

There are two ways to add regions to your territory:

  • Click on a plus symbol in a region to add it to your Territory.
