Update or Edit a Resume

How to update or edit a resume you've already made on EarnBetter

Updated over 12 months ago

Step 1: Go to "Documents" Tab

Once you're signed in to EarnBetter, go to your "Documents" tab. On desktop, this lives in the top left corner of your screen. On mobile, you'll access "Documents" through the menu in the top right.

Step 2: Navigate to the resume you're interested in editing.

When you click on "Documents", the default screen shows all of the base resumes you've created. You can also click into cover letters, custom docs, emails or reference letters.

For this article, we're going to dive into editing and updating a resume. Click on the thumbnail or title of the resume you want to edit (see screenshot below).

Step 3: Start by editing any of the content of the resume (ie: any of the wording + details included in each section)

In the left side menu, you can expand any of the sections of your resume to make edits. In the screenshot below, you can see we have expanded the "Summary" section - you can click into the text box and add/edit anything you'd like to that section.

Similar to the "Summary" section, you can click into any other section and make any edits that you'd like. The various sections are:

  1. Header: personal information such as name, email, phone number, etc.

  2. Summary: high-level overview of your experience and what you're looking for next

  3. Work History: click "add work experience" for each job you want to add to your resume. We would recommend including your most recent and relevant experience.

  4. Education: add in any education you want to appear on your resume.

  5. Certifications: feel free to add any relevant certifications

  6. Skills: we'll suggest some skills based on the type of job you're applying for - you can add those and/or you can add your own. It's likely a good idea to both. You'll want to be comprehensive in your skills section - this is important because some recruiters search through an ATS with certain keywords, so you want to make sure your resume will appear in the most amount of search queries.

  7. Custom Section: if you want to add another section to your resume such as "Volunteer Work" or "Project Work", you can create a custom section.

Please note that you can switch the name of the "Summary" section to "Objective" by clicking "Switch to Objective in the top right corner.

You can also remove this section from you resume completely - click on "visible" and it will make this section invisible. You can reverse that at any time by clicking on that button again.

Step 4: Move sections of your resume around (if you want to)

Please note that you can move sections around if you want to. See screenshot below - click the 6 dots on the left side of section you want to move - you can then drag and drop. So if you want to move "education" above "work experience", that is an option. And so on and so forth.

The only sections you cannot move are the Header and the Summary. You cannot remove the Header, but you can remove the Summary (see note in green box above).

Step 5: Use AI to rewrite certain sections of your resume (optional).

Once you have information populated in the "Summary" and "Work Experience" sections of your resume, you can use our AI feature to rewrite the information you've provided.

Just click the button "Rewrite summary/description with AI" and you'll be prompted with 3 different options to select from.

In the screenshot below, you can see what happens if you click "rewrite summary with AI" -- you'll be prompted with the original summary along with 3 different suggestions. You can click into each suggestion and pick whichever one you like best. You can also edit any of the suggestions, or revert back to the original.

Step 6: Next, you can edit the design of your resume (how your resume looks).

Click "Edit Design" and you'll have a bunch of options to customize the design of your resume. See screenshot below - let's go in order from top to bottom.

  1. Pick a resume template: we have 4 different templates to pick from (Classic, Bold, Clean and Modern).

    1. If you select the Bold or Modern template, you will also have the choice of 6 different color options.

    2. For this example, you can see I selected the "Bold" template and a light blue color.

  2. Next, look at the "Template Format" section and you can play around with different fonts, font sizes, margin sizes and header alignments.

    1. You have 8 different fonts to choose from. For this resume, I've selected "EB Garamond".

    2. For "font scale", you can make the font bigger or smaller. This is helpful if you're trying to make your resume fit on one page and need to bump the font size up/down a little in order to do so.

    3. Along the same vein, you can also adjust the margins - top/bottom and left/right.

    4. Finally, you can choose the header alignment - left, center or right.

Best Practice: whenever possible try to keep your resume to 1 page. You want your resume to be succinct so it's easy for recruiters to quickly scan the highlights of your experience/achievements.

Step 7: Share your resume with a mentor or friend for feedback (optional).

We always think it's a good idea to get feedback from a third party on your resume. It can be helpful to get an old coworker, boss or mentor to review your resume and make suggestions - they might have something important or relevant for you to add.

See screenshot: you can easily share your resume by clicking "Share Resume" >> "Sharing On" >> "Copy link to share" and then you can send it via text, email, etc.

Step 8: You have successfully edited your resume!

You can download by hitting "download" in the top right corner.

Your edits will be saved on this resume moving forward and you can access it from wherever you accessed this resume to begin with (ie: Resumes, Custom Docs, etc).

If you'd prefer to watch a video on how to edit your resume, watch to the video below. Start at :10 and you'll see how to make edits/updates to your resume. Please note that we've made some updates to our product design since this video, so we now have more robust formatting options (changing the font, font size, margins, header alignment, etc) but this should give you a good sense on how to edit the content.
