You can paint over Earthaus plaster finishes in dry area applications if the surface is properly prepared. Surface condition and prior sealing treatments determine how well paint will adhere. One firm exception: Tadelakt finishes in wet areas can never be painted over.
Paint Compatibility with Lime Plaster
Earthaus lime plasters are mineral-based and form a durable, breathable surface. Most paint types will adhere successfully once the plaster is clean, dry, and adequately primed.
Some Earthaus finishes — particularly those sealed with Olive Oil Soap Sealer or Beeswax Protective Sealer — create a water-resistant surface that can reduce paint adhesion. Proper surface preparation ensures a strong mechanical and chemical bond between the paint and the plaster.
How to Prepare the Surface for Paint
Allow freshly applied plaster to fully carbonate and dry before painting.
Lightly sand sealed or burnished surfaces to remove sheen and open the pore structure.
Wipe away all dust and residue after sanding.
Confirm the surface is stable, clean, and free of any soap residue or wax buildup — never paint over surfaces that feel damp, waxy, or oily.
Apply a high-quality primer suited for mineral substrates before painting.
Painting over unprepared or newly sealed plaster can trap moisture or lead to uneven adhesion. Once properly prepped and primed, the surface will accept a wide variety of paint types, including natural mineral and breathable acrylic coatings.
Things to Keep in Mind
Earthaus plasters are intended to be breathable finishes — painting over them may reduce vapor permeability.
Tadelakt finishes in wet areas must never be painted or coated.
Always test paint adhesion on a small area before full application.
