Preparing a Painted Surface
Previously painted drywall presents challenges due to variable adhesion, gloss level, and absorbency. A consistent, mechanically receptive surface must be established before plastering.
How to prepare:
Make sure the wall is clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, or loose paint.
Apply a fresh coat of primer mixed with Earthaus Primer Grit to create an even, textured bonding surface.
Allow the primer to dry fully before plastering.
Avoid glossy or slick paint finishes, which can prevent proper adhesion.
Why it matters: Primer Grit helps equalize surface texture and suction, allowing the plaster to adhere uniformly. It also minimizes risks of delamination or visible patchiness caused by differing paint layers beneath the plaster.
Dealing with Existing Texture
Many painted walls include pre-existing texture or orange peel finishes. These can telegraph through thin plaster layers if not addressed before application.
Options for smoothing:
If the texture depth is significant, the surface may require skimming to level high and low areas before priming.
For light to moderate textures, the plaster can typically be leveled by applying an additional coat of Earthaus Sand Plaster or Earthaus Stone Plaster.
Smoothing ensures uniform plaster thickness and finish quality, preventing ridges or ghosting from showing through the final coat.
