Can I Apply Earthaus Plaster to Plywood?

Plywood works as a plaster substrate when joints are reinforced and tannins are sealed with stain-blocking primer plus Primer Grit.

You can apply Earthaus plasters to plywood substrates when the surface is properly prepared. Plywood is more flexible and resin-rich than traditional drywall, so special care must be taken to prevent joint cracking and tannin bleed-through, which can affect both appearance and performance.

Preventing Joint Cracking

Plywood panels expand and contract slightly with humidity and temperature changes. This movement can create visible cracks where panels meet if not properly reinforced.

How to reinforce joints:

  1. Reinforce all plywood joints with fiberglass mesh tape embedded in a quick-set drywall compound (such as DuraBond).

  2. Once dry, sand the surface smooth and flush so no joints telegraph through the plaster.

  3. Ensure all seams are level and the substrate is fully stable before applying primer.

Why it matters: Earthaus plasters are thin, rigid mineral coatings. Any movement in the underlying plywood can reflect through the plaster layer, leading to fine cracking along joints or seams.

Preventing Tannin Bleed-Through

Certain plywood species — particularly those containing oak or other tannin-rich woods — can release natural pigments that migrate through plaster over time. This may result in yellow or brown discoloration on the finished surface.

How to seal against tannins:

  1. Apply two coats of a water-based stain-blocking primer to the entire surface.

  2. Allow full drying time between coats for proper sealing.

  3. Mix Earthaus Primer Grit into the second coat of primer to establish the mechanical bond needed for plaster adhesion.

Why it matters: Proper sealing prevents tannin migration and ensures color stability across the finished surface. The addition of Primer Grit guarantees that the mineral plaster adheres securely to the sealed plywood.

Before You Start

  • Always verify that the plywood is securely fastened and free from flex or vibration.

  • Do not apply Earthaus plasters over oily, waxed, or solvent-treated wood surfaces.

  • Following correct preparation steps ensures both color integrity and long-term adhesion, especially for decorative installations such as custom range hoods or built-ins.
