Why Tadelakt Is Not Suitable for Bathtubs
While Tadelakt is water-repellent and highly durable on vertical or gently sloped surfaces, it is not designed for full immersion. Constant exposure to standing water and bath products can lead to aesthetic and structural issues over time.
Prolonged water exposure: Continuous submersion weakens the lime surface and can lead to softening or etching.
Staining: Bath products such as oils, soaps, and salts can cause visible discoloration or dulling.
Surface marking: Setting objects like soap bars or bottles on the surface can leave permanent rings or stains.
Maintenance: Frequent re-sealing would be required to maintain water resistance, which is impractical for bathtubs.
Recommended Alternatives
Better use cases for Tadelakt:
Shower walls
Vanity aprons or backsplashes
Tub surrounds or cladding where direct, prolonged submersion does not occur
Alternative materials for bathtubs:
Use a tiled or solid-surface tub liner designed for full submersion.
Tadelakt can be used on the outer surround or vertical face of a built-in tub for design continuity.
