Can I apply Tadelakt to Kitchen Countertops?

Tadelakt is not recommended for kitchen countertops — food oils and acids cause staining, etching, and wear.

Applying Earthaus Tadelakt to kitchen countertops is not recommended, due to its susceptibility to staining, etching, and wear from daily use and food preparation.

Why Tadelakt Should Not Be Used on Countertops

Although Tadelakt is water-repellent and durable on vertical surfaces, it is not suitable for horizontal applications exposed to frequent contact, oils, and acidic substances. These conditions can permanently affect the finish.

  • Staining: Exposure to food oils, wine, citrus, vinegar, or coffee can cause dark or light stains that cannot be removed.

  • Etching: Acidic ingredients dull the polished surface and break down the protective soap layer.

  • Surface wear: Regular cutting, cleaning, and heat exposure degrade the finish over time.

  • Maintenance: Maintaining a consistent sheen and seal in a kitchen environment requires impractical levels of upkeep.

Recommended Use Areas for Tadelakt

  • Bathroom walls, backsplashes, and tub surrounds

  • Vanity aprons and feature walls

  • Other interior vertical or low-contact areas

Why it matters: These locations showcase Tadelakt's unique luster and water resistance without exposing it to the harsh conditions of a working countertop.
