Tadelakt cannot be finished matte in wet areas such as showers. The water-repellent seal of authentic Tadelakt depends on a smooth, polished surface created during the burnishing and soap sealing process. A matte texture prevents proper compression of the plaster particles and inhibits the lime-soap reaction that creates Tadelakt's water resistance.
Why Polishing is Required for Water Resistance
The water resistance of Tadelakt is achieved through a chemical reaction between lime in the plaster and Olive Oil Soap. This reaction creates an insoluble calcium soap compound within the surface of the plaster.
Why polishing matters:
Burnishing compresses the lime particles and creates a dense, tight surface.
A polished surface allows the Olive Oil Soap to penetrate evenly and react uniformly with the lime.
A matte or unpolished surface is porous, preventing consistent water resistance.
Matte Finish Options for Dry Areas
A Tadelakt-style finish can be left unburnished in dry, non-wet areas for a matte aesthetic. However, this finish is not sealed or water-resistant and should not be used in showers, bath surrounds, or other wet applications.
Important:
Matte Earthaus Tadelakt in dry areas should not be treated as water-resistant.
For wet areas, polishing is non-negotiable for performance and durability.
