Tadelakt darkening when it gets wet is normal. It is common for Tadelakt to darken temporarily in areas exposed to water. This is a natural characteristic of lime-based plasters and is especially noticeable in darker-colored finishes. Once the surface dries, the color will return to normal.
Why Tadelakt Darkens When Wet
Like many natural materials — including stone, concrete, and unsealed tile — Tadelakt can temporarily change in appearance when wet. This color shift is caused by water interacting with the mineral surface of the plaster, altering light reflection until the moisture evaporates.
Why it matters:
Darkening when wet is a natural behavior and does not indicate a failure or loss of water resistance.
The effect is more visible in mid-tones and darker colors than in light or white finishes.
Once fully dry, the original color and sheen are restored.
When to Be Concerned
Indicators of a potential issue:
Areas that remain persistently dark or damp after the surrounding surface has dried.
Localized dark spots that do not resolve after normal drying time.
Visible water seeping from behind the plaster or at edges and seams.
